Alaskan Cruises - Singapore Airlines Flies High Thanks to Its Customer Service Culture

It has developed a tremendous customer service culture. One company that's easy to talk about is Singapore Airlines. I often share stories and examples of companies that deliver great service, as a professional speaker.

Here's how they do it: Singapore Airlines (SIA) frequently wins international awards for top service and in-flight quality, profitable every year since the beginning.

Question or decision is considered in light of the commitment to providing a world-class customer service culture, every major issue. That quality service is a fundamental objective and aspiration of the airline, without question, the mission statement and core values establish. SIA's focus on its customer service culture is clear. Clarity and Commitment. 1.

SIA understands that daily customer contact can be draining and that customer expectations are always on the rise. Training is not a one-time affair in this customer service culture. Continuous Training. 2.

Commercial and Management Development) offer a wide range of educational programs to bolster the customer service culture, flight Operations, four training divisions within the company (Cabin Crew, to meet this challenge.

Uplift and improve their performance and uphold the customer service culture, sIA staff members are continually motivated to upgrade, through full-scale simulations or on the job, whether in the classroom.

This gives the airline a twofold advantage. SIA's investment in training and building its customer service culture goes on, even during the downturns. Training to build the customer service culture is not conducted just during robust economic times.

Not just nice-to-have bonuses, it demonstrates to all SIA staff that continuous learning and improvement are essential principles for success, second. It allows SIA to surge ahead in quality service when other carriers cut back, first.

High-flyers (high performance and potential) are identified early and given every opportunity to learn and grow within the company's customer service culture. SIA staff are regularly appraised for performance and potential. Career Development. 3.

Not just for one department or another, " and with a commitment to do what's best for the customers and the business, with a shared understanding of "the big picture, this leads to a management team with great breadth and depth. Senior managers are effectively developed with frequent rotation through top positions in the company.

In the pilot pool alone more than 25 countries are represented! People from different cultures work together to produce a seamless and consistently positive customer experience. 000 staff (including subsidiaries) located around the world, with more than 28, sIA is a large organization. Internal Communication. 4.

Websites and a monthly company-wide magazine, sIA publishes a variety of department newsletters, to keep everyone on the same wavelength and bolster the customer service culture.

Yields and customer satisfaction levels in this customer service culture, marketing, semi-annual business meetings provide another forum for sharing and evaluating results in sales. A program called "Staff Ideas in Action" ensures that new suggestions for improvement are constantly put forward to build the customer service culture. Regular dialogue sessions between management and staff keep communication flowing.

The legendary "SIA Girl" is always featured, or new seats and entertainment services, onboard cuisine, new airplanes, whether their advertisement is about new destinations. Consistent External Communication. 5.

The personification of that service and the company's customer service culture, and the "SIA Girl" is the brand identity, the bottom line is delivering high-quality service. Entertainment or destination, seat, because the bottom line for SIA is not the plane. Why?

She is always there, in the airline's external communication. A competent pilot or a friendly telephone reservations agent would not carry the same consistency in external communication: The "SIA Girl" represents impeccable quality service and is the face of the company's customer service culture, but showing a picture of a smiling engineer, of course everyone knows it takes the entire SIA team to deliver excellent service.

SIA then consolidates this input with other key data to create a quarterly "Service Performance Index" that is very closely watched throughout the airline. Customer focus groups and rapid replies to every compliment or complaint they receive, sIA makes a concerted effort to stay in touch with customers through in-flight surveys. Connection with Customers. 6.

) And I enjoy it, (I am one of those very frequent flyers! And more, priority seating and wait listing, additional baggage allowance, and very frequent flyers achieve an elite "Solitaire" status with a wide range of valuable privileges: most convenient check-in. Attractive offers and publications sent regularly to Priority Passenger Service (PPS) members, frequent flyers are kept well-connected with special messages.

SIA watches closely to see what can be adopted or adapted for the airline industry, convenience or comfort, retail outlets and other service industries take a step forward in their amenities, restaurants, banks, when hotels. SIA looks for new ways to improve and grow its customer service culture, even outside the airline industry. " SIA tracks competitors' progress closely. The airline industry is intensely competitive with every carrier seeking new ways to "get ahead of the pack. Benchmarking. 7.

Innovative cargo facilities - the list goes on and on, e-mail and internet check-in, fax, telephone, "book the cook" service for special meals in First and Business Class, cutting-edge gaming and in-flight entertainment, individual video screens and telephones in every seat, fax machines onboard, introducing free drinks and headsets, sIA has built a solid reputation for taking the lead and doing things differently, from the earliest days. Investment and Innovation, improvement. 8.

Rewards and Recognition. 9. But SIA makes every possible effort to find the key to success - or to create it through the customer service culture it has created, not every innovation succeeds and some are eventually removed from service (the fax machines are long gone). Make it work and see it through, this commitment to continuous improvement is coupled with a cultural determination to try it out.

The most prestigious award is reserved for truly superior service, while excellent staff performance is rewarded with increased pay and positions.

Which further builds the company's customer service culture, and their personal status as a "Managing Director's Award Winner" remains a badge of distinction for life, the story of their efforts is published in the monthly magazine, winners and their families are flown to Singapore for a special dinner celebration. But it is the most revered accolade in the airline, this award carries no financial benefit. Innovative or selfless acts of service, the "CEO's Transforming Customer Service Award" is given annually to teams and individuals who respond to unique customer situations with exceptionally positive.

The result of these efforts is a customer service culture that is vigorously committed to customers and continuous improvement. Pride and Profits, professionalism. 10.

Staff pride and sense of ownership are evident in the way they protect the airline's reputation and participate in programs like the "aircraft adoption" scheme.

" SIA's profits are "the applause we receive for providing consistent quality and service to our customers, rather. But not as an end in themselves, good profits are also achieved.

Even in the best customer service culture, there will always be room for improvement. 000 feet are not always perfectly deluxe, and meals at 39, telephone lines become congested, bags go astray. Even SIA cannot satisfy every customer every time. Of course not. Does all this mean that SIA is perfect?

Recommendations and constructive criticism to constantly build the customer service culture, staff must be proud of the airline yet remain eager for passenger suggestions. Managers must be open to change and not become arrogant or defensive. SIA must work doubly hard to avoid becoming complacent and losing sight of its commitment to a positive customer service culture, with a track record of success.

Recommends the airline to others and takes the time and effort to point out ways the airline can still improve, flies with the airline again, the definition of a truly loyal airline customer is someone who is pleased with the service.

And my mail to SIA includes plenty of ideas and suggestions to help them improve and further build their positive customer service culture. My speeches and training programs are peppered with positive stories from the airline's history and lore. I look forward to my flights on SIA and I use the carrier two or three times each month.

They've got a great way to fly - and to run a highly successful business with a fantastic customer service culture. Singapore Airlines has earned my loyalty on the ground and in the sky.

Be open to the fact that you might meet someone interesting during your trip, if you are single.

Life is full of surprises - you might just be amazed at what a little spontaneity can bring into your scheduled and carefully planned life. Nyc Accommodation - The Hotel Rating System

You can make the best selection, when you have a basic understanding of it. A rating system is used, in order to establish a basis for comparison between different hotels.

So understanding the hotel star ratings for one area will give you a good general idea of what to expect anywhere, the differences from place to place are small, generally. But this has not yet been done, there have been some attempts to standardize it world wide. The star system differs slightly from country to country. And amenities at various hotels, size, star ratings have been established for comparing different hotels and giving patrons some idea what to expect in service.

But no bellhop or room service, some two star hotels have limited dining facilities attached. But televisions are standard in the rooms, the furnishings do not differ much from a one star. But usually part of a larger chain, the two star hotel is similar. But good dining is found nearby, there is usually no restaurant located in the hotel. Their furnishing and facilities are clean but simple. A one star hotel is usually two to four stories high and owned by a single proprietor. The system is usually based on five stars with one star being the lowest rating and five star the highest.

The dining room and room service offer several menu selections. The four star hotel is often located near other similar hotels and has one or more pools plus fitness centers. And valet parking are generally featured, room service, bell hop. It features well furnished and well lit rooms. The four star hotel is also called a superior hotel. They are located near major attractions and are also part of a larger chain. They will feature much more elaborate furnishings and an attached dining facility serving from breakfast through dinner. Three star hotels are considered first class hotels.

Some independent hotels also merit the rating as they offer intimacy and personal service not always available with chain hotels, although most five star hotels are part of large chains. Several choices of dining and entertainment are often featured as well, pools. The rooms are large and well appointed. Large lobbies and round the clock room service are expected. It offers just about anything you would expect from a deluxe hotel. The five star hotel is a deluxe hotel.

A rudimentary understanding of hotel star ratings will give you an edge when planning your stays or reserving rooms, although this is just a basic guide. It can be assumed that these hotels will be both very fancy and very expensive to justify their six or seven star claims, although this is considered simply an advertising ploy. There are a couple of hotels located overseas that are claiming six star or seven star ratings.

Squaw Valley Resort - Cruise Review NCL Jade Norway Cruise

Here is my day by day diary. 2008, cruising Norway from Southampton to the North Cape June 29-July 11, i sailed on NCL's Jade.

There are a lot of sightseeing ideas on the official tourism site: visitnorway.com Note: At the time of travel 1.00 USD = 5.09180 NOK
United States Dollars = Norway Kroner.

A very smooth on time flight. Day 0 We took Delta to London Heathrow.

When we asked the bus dispatcher, something we did not find out until 1145, the coach terminal is nowhere near Terminal 5, unfortunately. Where we waited, so we wound up in Terminal 5, the directional signs were not quite the overly precise way you an expect in Britain. This was plenty of time to get our luggage and walk to the terminal, since we arrived at 9AM. We looked for the coach terminal to take our pre-booked bus to Southampton (National Express) at 1150, day 1 When we arrived at Heathrow.

The cruise left from City Cruise Terminal We were on our way, before we knew it. Just in time for the muster call, and we were soon on the ship, one advantage of arriving so late was that there were no lines to board. Readily available at the coach station took us to the ship in 5 minutes, a taxi. We were able to get into Southampton early, and by taking side roads through pretty towns, he was masterful at avoiding the traffic pile up on the motorway! With the wrong tickets, an understanding bus driver allowed us on board, fortunately. We were wait listed for the 1250 and told to come back just before departure. Which would have brought us to Southampton just an hour before the scheduled departure time of 4PM for the Jade, where we waited for the 1250 bus, she arranged another bus to take us to the proper coach terminal. Who called ahead to stop of bus from departing, despite the best efforts of the bus dispatcher from terminal 5, we missed out 1150 bus.

Oh well! And missed the shows, a good long nap (we had been up for what seemed like days) meant we had a very late dinner.

I have since discovered that it takes a lot of brain power to know all of the tricks. I had always thought it was a game played by ladies with too much time on their hands. I am so confused by bridge. And more, entertainment, learning to play bridge, a stretch class, breakfast. Day 2: A day at sea with so many activities in the daily that we had trouble accommodating what we wanted to do in one day.

Lesund; spend some time finding the trolls hidden in the buildings around Å. And every one of them appears in the carved ornamentation of the buildings, trolls are important here. Very manageable on foot. And many nicely decorated shops and houses around the harbor, a walking tour on our own included the stone church. A lovely small port with Art Noveau architecture and shops, day 3: Alesund.

Laid the foundation of Kristiansund's growth, exported to the Mediterranean countries, which, klippfish is salted and dried cod. You may choose to visit the Milnbrygga - Norway's National Klippfish Museum. A fishing and farming society for generations, you'll find the island of Averoy, close to Kristiansund. Although there was quite a bit to do in the vicinity if you wanted a shore excursion, we strolled the area. Day 4: Kristiansund - another nice small harbour.

There was very little snow on the mountaintops - quite a bit less than in Alaska. Clear skies and clear blue waters. Day 4 Svartsien Glacier - our first glacier was spectacular!

Although they were not bad, another warning it was around this northern part of Norway that we had the roughest seas. And see a film, there is a huge hall here where you can see a film about the area have something to eat and drink and buy your souvenirs, if you go to the North Cape by bus. You meet the local Sami people and their reindeer, in the shops in Honningsvag. A life-size igloo where you can get in, a map of the Artic, ramp with sledge, tables, seats, walls, bar. All you will see in the inside is made on natural ice from the lakes of Lapland. It can be visited in summer; k, a modern design made by Laila Kolostyá. Alongside the taxi station), sjogata 1A (by the sea. The Arctic Ice Bar - made completely of ice - is a short walk from the cruise ship dock. Even in July, it was cold. Day 5 Honningsvag is the stop for Nordkapp (North Cape) most northerly point of Europe.

Day 6 Cruise The Barents Sea

Passing magnificent waterfalls, but we sailed instead to Geiranger, day 8 Hellesylt A 3 hour stop was made here to let passengers take the overland tour to Geiranger.

And souvenir shops and beautiful views of the hills are the main draw if you do not take an organized tour, sod roofed houses. Switchback roads to the top of the mountains, you can see the winding, from here. Describing the daily life in Geiranger from the past and present, your first visit is the Norwegian Fjord Centre, from the village of Geiranger. ". Geiranger
Geiranger Fjord is known as "the most beautiful fjord in the world.

With UNESCO world heritage status The Wharf / Bryggen is characterized by its wooden buildings with pointed gables facing the harbor You can also take a trip on the Floibanen (funicular) for amazing views over the whole of Bergen and the surrounding hills, bergen of course is famous for its fish market, but we also took the tourist train for a 1 hour ride through the area and up over the city, it is easily walkable. Yet it's got a great small-town feel, day 9 Bergen 8:00 AM 7:00 PM
Bergen is the second largest city in Norway.

And for his collection of piano miniatures Lyric Pieces, for his incidental music to Henrik Ibsen's play Peer Gynt (which includes In the Hall of the Mountain King), he is best known for his Piano Concerto in A minor. (15 June 1843 - 4 September 1907) He was a Norwegian composer and pianist who composed in the romantic period. Edvard Hagerup Grieg is from Bergen.

Built in 1125; the impressive Cathedral forms a backdrop. Too, there are lots of shops to explore. Flowers and seafood are laid out on sale, a colourful scene greets you where fruit and vegetables. Your stroll through Stavanger continues to the market square at the head of the harbour bay. An important rehabilitation project has meant that this is now northern Europe's largest and best-preserved 'wooden house' settlement. Craftsmen and traders, mostly built for seafarers, a lively area that consisting of more than 150 houses - well-preserved 18th and 19th century wooden houses, your exploration begins in 'Old Stavanger'. Day 10 Stavanger European Capital of Culture in 2008.

Day 11Thu Cruise The North Sea - -

Day 12 Fri London (Southampton)

I hope they will get better. The lack or coordination and absence of team spirit was clear. Although some are from other NCL ships, a mostly new crew boarded, when it was deployed to Europe. As required by law, with an all American crew, it had been in Hawaii. This ship was just recently repositioned to Europe, built in 2006
Crew: Unfortunately. The Ship: NCL Jade - Beautifully designed and maintained.

The announcements from the activities director ranged from silly to stupid young girl musings. The activities were mis-timed. Even telling us to turn our clocks back on the wrong day, the daily newsletter was often wrong.

But things improved after that, our cabin was not made up on the first night.

Different recipe perhaps, different chef. Being unable to reproduce the same dish on two successive nights, though was inconsistent, the Italian Kitchen. One of the premium restaurants was good, teppenyaki. The main dining room had slow service when we sampled it. Always varied offerings and was nearly always open, the Food: The Buffet had generous.

The crew show was foolish and required not a bit of talent. Particularly the gospel singers, the singers were mainly good. The dancers were just okay. And could not understand why he made fun of anyone who walked in late, i missed most of the jokes of the famous comedian. Which left from Southampton, entertainment: The shows were aimed at the mainly English passengers on this cruise.

And I found more information on the internet than at the shore excursion desk, it seemed that no one bothered to do any shore excursion research in advance, since this was the Jade's first visit to Norway. Shore Excursions: We did not take any ship sponsored shore excursions.

And we never needed raingear or umbrellas, it was sunny. Although we sailed in July, it was not warm enough for summer shorts. Including a fleece of some sort, what to wear: Layers.

After the staff has time to assimilate into a team. But at a much later date, i would try the Jade again. And I attribute the problems listed above to the inexperienced staff, overall: We did have a good time.
